I can't even begin to tell you how happy I am that my mom is coming to live with me. Yes, I'm 23 years old, and yes, I can take care of myself, but I don't care! Things will be a lot better with her around. It's always nice to have someone around to comfort you when life gets rough...and in medical school, I have many such moments. I just hope that she'll enjoy living in Miami. I personally love my school and the weather, but that's about it. There's not all that much to do here unless you love beaches and the night life. I'm more of a cultural events type of person, who loves musical and dance performances. So naturally I'm already starting to miss San Francisco. I swear, if I can help it, I'm going to settle down in the Bay Area eventually.

Hey guys! Nothing depressing to report like last time. Actually, overall things are going great. School has gotten a lot more intestesting a little less stressful, my research project is finally starting, I'm keeping up with my two favorite TV Shows (American Idol and Miley Jab Hum Tum)...and basically just enjoying life. And of course...my mom is visiting me in March, so I'm excited about that. I hope I don't jinx it by saying so, but I am as content as can be right now. :) I feel like there's so much to be grateful for and so much to look forward to.

So overall, med school is going well...but there have been a few moments where I have questioned my career choice. Maybe I just need to stop being so emotional. Anyway, I have an interesting experience to share with whoever is willing to read it...

I helped organize a huge health fair last weekend that went quite smoothly overall. There was one upsetting experience which only involved me. I was taking vitals (blood pressure, pulse, height, weight, etc) at the fair and my very first patient started yelling at me. He refused to sit down, said I pumped the bp cuff too high (even though I didn't) and said he wanted someone else to take his bp because I was taking too long. He ACTUALLY made me cry! I had to leave the room to calm down. Fortunately some friends were there and they consoled me saying that he was just being a jerk. I eventually returned to the vitals room and continued working. All of my other patients were nice, so I regained my self-esteem and realized that it really wasn't my fault. Although I'm still a little traumatized form the experience, I think it was beneficial in a way because I'm probably going to have an occasional patient like that in the future. I better get used to it before I actually become a doctor...It does irritate me though that he thought it was okay for him to behave that way when we are providing him with a free service.

For any of you guys who want to be doctors, you'll have to be prepared for things like this. Not all patients are grateful for the service doctors provide them.

As you all know, earlier today Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States! I celebrated by skipping all my classes and relaxing at home. His inauguration speech was very good! Considering what a great orator he is, that was expected. I really hope that he accomplishes the goals that he has set out for himself, and that he is able to keep the Democratic Party united.

Nothing new to report on the personal front. Just keeping up with school and staying busy. I watched Ghajini over Winter Break, which I enjoyed thoroughly, but thought it was too filmi to be considered a great movie. Last Friday, I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire and absolutely loved it! Hope it takes home several Oscars...

LOTS of creations today!

That was the best Thanksgiving break ever!!! I drove up to Orlando with two of my classmates, then joined my cousins at the Swan and Dophin resort...We went to Magic Kingdom on Thursday and Animal Kingdom on Friday. Both were super fun! Then on Saturday, I went to my cousin's place...I hadn't seen her in ten years! She has three kids and I really enjoyed hanging out with them. Can't wait to go visit them again...

Not much to say right now, except that I think I may have selected my specialty! I've gotten comments from several friends in the past that I'm patient and good with kids....and recently a classmate of mine said that same thing. So I'm thinking...why not pediatrics? I do love children and would love to make them feel better when their sick. I know I was always saying that I wanted to devote my life to cancer, and I haven't given up on that. So, I guess to be precise, I'm considering going into Pediatric Oncology. Let's see if I still say the same thing two years from now.

Hey guys! Wow, I was gone for a long time...I can barely believe that I've been in med school for three months! There's just so much to do that time flies by. Before I know it, I'll probably be graduating and heading off to a residency program.

The first two months were, for the lack of a better term, completely and utterly insane! The Human Structure module including Gross Anatomy was the most stressful eight weeks of my life. The day before the final exam, I spent the entire day in the anatomy lab, examining cadavers and inhaling that carcinogen called formaldehyde. In the end it paid off, and I did reasonable well in the module. I thought the second module (Genetics and Biochemistry) would be much easier, but it proved to be quite challenging as well. I took the final exam this morning. Looking forward to starting fresh once again.

Okay, enough about school...Tuesday of this week was a historical day and probably one of the most significant of our lifetimes. After a long and close battle, Barack Obama emerged victorious as the newest President-Elect of the United States! This was exactly what I was hoping for, so I'm ecstatic. It's about time someone brings change to this country. And in recognition of Senator Obama's accomplishment, my new LJ layout features him and his adorable family. Hope you all like it!

Lots of creations over the past few months, but I don't have time to post them all. I will be uploading them to my website gallery soon. By next week, I should have a new layout for my website, and all creations uploaded. As for now, I'll just share some creations I made this afternoon, after my exam.  A lot of the textures I used are by misstarlight.

Everything is free for use!

OH MY GOD! I can hardly believe it, but I am starting medical school tomorrow...In only 12 hours, I will wake up and get ready for my VERY FIRST day of classes. I'm soooo excited!!! The day is finally here. You know, until Friday when I actually formally registered, I couldn't get the irrational fear out of my mind that something would go wrong. That maybe one of my transcripts didn't arrive on time or that my financial aid wouldn't get processed. But now I am finally at ease and confident that I am in fact now a medical student.

We had orientation on Thursday and Friday which was totally exhausting! Imagine, sitting in one seat for seven hours a day while the med school deans just talk on and on about the curriculum, school policies, resources, ethics, expectations, etc, etc. Of course, it was very useful and interesting at times, but definitely tiring as well. Saturday was more of a fun day...It was organized by academic societies and called "Game Day". We were sorted (somewhat Harry Potter style) into one of 12 societies and we competed in some outdoor activities against each other. My society called Courvoiser (named after a French liver surgeon, but apparently also the name of an alcoholic beverage) did very well, getting first in one competition and second in another. Hope we'll maintain the spirit and competitiveness in the future.

So now for creations. I've been busy with requests lately, so didn't get a chance to make much. You can find three new sets under the cut. More coming up whenever I have time.

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long gap between entries. I was busy preparing for my big move, and YES, I am now in Miami, one of the most beautiful cities in the world! I LOVE every single thing about it. I'm still working on furnishing my new apartment, though I'm almost done. Guess what! I'm lving by myself in a one bedroom! Can you believe it?! All alone! It's a bit lonely at times and occasionally scary at night, but I'm getting used to it. Fortunately I have a car, so I can go out and explore whenever I feel upto it. It's a brand new slate grey 2009 Toyota Corolla, and I'm completely in love with it! Will post pictures of the car and apartment soon.

As far as medical school goes, I still have a lot of preparation to do. I haven't really purchased any supplies yet, but I've heard that the one thing we'll definitely need from the start is a stethoscope. I'll probably buy one online within the next few days. Besides that, I guess just books and stationary. It can't be too different from undergrad, right?

Okay, enough talk about academics...let's move on to creations! First of all, as you can see, I've finally updated my layout. The new leayout features Amrita Rao, looking absolutely stunning in red. I've worked hard on it, so please leave your comments and let me know what you think.

You can find seven of my newest sets under the cut. I've made a lot more in the past couple months, but it'll take me way to long to post them all. If you want to check them out, please visit my gallery here.

P.S. I watched Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na a while back, and I highly recommend it. It's not a great film by any definition, but you'll be entertained. Imran Khan was wonderful as a newcomer, but it was Genelia D'Souza who stole the show with her bubbly presence.

I've now had a couple days where I've been staying at home and relaxing.  It's really nice to be able to focus on my creative interests once again.  The deadline for the second round of my singing contest is approaching in two days and I will be singing "Jaaneman Ek Nazar Dekhle" from Mere Mehboob.  Not quite ready yet, but I have tons of time today and tomorrow to perfect it.  I also finally updated my story/fanfic on IF and posted chapter 15.  I think the storyline is progressing quite well...hopefully I'll stay inspired.  If anyone is interested in checking it out, here's the link: http://www.india-forums.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=802016.  Finally my creations.  Everything is going okay on that front.  I'm still learning some new techniques and trying to think of unique styles and themes.  The update today is not one of my favorites, but the icons came out nicely.  Hope you guys like them!

I'm sitting in my front yard right now, where my mom has laid out nearly all of our belonging to sell. It's so strange to think that in a couple months, she'll be in India, my brother will be with my dad, and I'll be in Los Angeles, Miami or Houston for medical school. Although sometimes days seem to go by slow, when I look back at the past few years, they seem to have flown by. I'll be turning 23 in September, and it seems like I'll have to take on more responsibility than ever before. I'm not sure what the next few years will bring me. Will I enjoy medical school or will it be a frightening experience? Will I get to see my family as much as I'd like to? Is it possible that I might get married soon and start my own family? So many questions which only time will answer.

In the meantime, I'm trying to keep busy. I'm taking part in several contests on India-Forums, and organizing some for the CID section. I'm helping my mom clear out the house and teaching my brother to drive. In addition, I'm making plans to visit friends and have some memorable experiences before I head off. And of course, I've been keeping up with creations. I just finished a large number of requests, so I'm back to choosing pictures that inspire me now.

The first three sets in the update are ones I just made in the past two days. I haven't posted them anywhere yet. The rest are from the last couple weeks. Hope you like them!

I'm so thrilled to finally be done with work. Now I'll be staying with my family for three months before finally heading off to medical school. I'm gonna try to enjoy this time as much as possible, because I'm sure that after August, life will get really hectic, and I'll never get an opportunity like this again.

Another HUGE development: My mom is moving to India! Yes, when I go to med school, she'll go back to the motherland. She made sure it was okay with me and my brother before making the decision...and we're both happy about it. I'm probably going to be in Miami next year, so who knows how often I would get to see her even if she stayed in the US....probably only twice a year. Now it'll only be once, but at least I'll have another excuse to visit India. And my brother is becoming a lot more independent now...one more year, and he'll be off to college. I'm sure he'll be able to handle it. We're already planning to visit her next summer (2009)...and probably travel a bit too! Can't wait!!!

Okay, now for the creations. As you can tell, I've finally figured out how to post an LJ banner. For my first one, I chose the love of my life, Muzamil Ibrahim. Doesn't he look hot? But remember, you can only admire from afar. ;-) I have also made tons of new sets and icons. Enjoy and feel free to use! I'd appreciate your comments.

Hi everyone!  Sorry I've been away for so long.  Work has been keeping me pretty busy, and I'm still worried about which medical school I'll be going to in the fall.  I can't believe it's April and I still haven't heard from all of them yet.  Oh well, I've already been selected at UMiami and I'd be absolutely content going there.  I really hope I'll be sure about it by the end of the month though.  Anyway, another activity that's been keeping me busy is the India-Forums SRGMP Singing Contest.  The deadline for the first round is coming up soon on the 15th and I'm singing "Jab Chali Thandi Hawa" from Do Badan.  Almost ready but need a little more practice.

Okay, now to get to the subject of this post.  So, the Olympic Torch passed through San Francisco yesterday.  Although I work in the city, I didn't give it much thought at first because I didn't know where exactly the ceremony and relay would be held.  But as soon as I got to work, I found out that it was supposed to pass by AT&T Park, which is RIGHT next door to my lab!!!

Hey everyone! I just got back from India where I had some fun times. Overall, the trip could have been better, especially since I was sick half the time. But I'm still glad I got to see some relatives who I hadn't seen in years. I spent a day with my brother and cousin shopping at Pallika Bazaar in Delhi, which was totally awesome. But the best part of the trip was the food!!! Somehow everything just tastes better there...I'm really gonna miss that.

Anyway, still kinda tired from the trip so I don't have much to say, but here are a few new sets!

I meant to make this post days ago, but finally found the time. I'll start out with a rant about my life, then I'll post my new creations. If you're not interested in listening to me complain or giving me advice, just skip the next two paragraphs. I won't mind....honestly.

Anyway, where should I start. Life is so uncertain right now...especially with the whole medical school thing. I want to be a physician scientist more than anything in the world, but the 7-10 more years of school required to get the dual MD/PhD program are scaring me. If it were a definite amount of time, I wouldn't have minded so much, but the time to complete a PhD can never be predicted. Anyway, I thought I had it all figured out, but suddenly I came to the realization that being in school for the better part of my life may not be a good idea. Not that I don't love school. I've been working for almost four months now (at a lab), and all I can think about is going back to school. But the thing is, I'm seriously thinking about the whole marriage thing. I'm not ready to get married now, but I may be in a couple years. Some people may have the ability to manage time well and handle marriage and school at the same time, but I'm not sure I'm one of those people. I just don't want to start a family when I'm over 30, and it seems like that's what will happen if I do the MD/PhD.

Another option is to just go for the MD and possible add the PhD later, if I'm up for it. The only problem with this is that MD/PhD programs are fully funded (meaning free) whereas we have to pay for MD programs. So if I get admitted into an MD/PhD program and then rejected it, only to later realize that it's what I want to do, I'm going to lose a lot of money. I'm sure most people will advise me to accept the MD/PhD and then drop the PhD later if I don't want to do it...this seems like a good option, but the problem is that I'll feel incredibly guilty about it. The program pays for tuition with the expectation that the student will complete both degrees. It is possible to drop at any point, of course...but I'm sure that the program coordinators hate when it happens. Anyway, maybe it's too early to be talking about this now. I only have one acceptance (U of Miami!), and that's MD only so far. I'm still waiting to hear back from MD/PhD programs. Maybe I won't get into any of them, and then the decision will be made for me. We'll see....but if you do have any advice for me, please let me know. I'll take all the guidance I can get! Thanks for listening!

Update time! I finally decided to change my sig size (they were WAY too long) and learned some new techniques. It's going to be a slow start, but I hope that within a year or so, I'll have a few hundred sets. Please comment on my new artwork. Any constructive criticism is welcome!

Now that I've seen Jodhaa Akbar twice, I realize I have a lot to say about it!  I hope this review doesn't bore anyone, because that's the complete opposite of my intention.  Here's my message to anyone who hasn't seen the film yet: Go watch it tonight!  You'll be glad that you did.

Review: Jodhaa Akbar

by Rabia

Magnificent, spectacular, superb, mindblowing!!!  Ok, I better stop before I start sounding like Himesh Reshammiya on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007.  In all seriousness, Jodhaa Akbar is a beautifully made film that deserves all the praise it has been receiving from critics and audiences alike.  Ashutosh Gowarikar has scored once again, as have both of the lead actors and their chemistry with each other.  Does this mean that Jodhaa Akbar is flawless?  Of course not.  I have yet to watch a film that is truly flawless.  Does it mean I’ll become an unpaid advertiser encouraging friends and relatives to head to the theater immediately to watch the film?  I’ve already started!

The story of Jodhaa Akbar is difficult to describe in brief because it involves three or four subplots interwoven to portray the legacy of a Mughal King’s rule.  The overlying storyline revolves around Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar’s marriage to Jodhaa Bai, the princess of Amer.  He accepts her hand solely for the purpose of strengthening his alliance with Amer and expanding his kingdom, but ultimately must embark on a new journey to win her love.  As the couple becomes acquainted with one another, Akbar must also learn to doubt the intentions of those he believed to be loyal, discover the difference between conquering and ruling, and develop into a noble king who can reign over the united country while maintaining the admiration of its citizens.

I finally decided to start a live journal...well, mostly because all the other fan art creators seem to have one, so I thought, why not?  There are some ideas and thoughts that I'd like to share once in a while, along with new creations, resources, tutorials, etc.  Hopefully this will be an outlet for all of that.

I am currently working on a brand new layout for my website.  Once it's ready, I'll post my newest creations in my gallery as well as here.  Everything will be free for use, as long as credit is given where it is deserved.  Most of my creations are Bollywood-inspired, but occasionally I may use pictures from Hollywood, TV Shows, Sports, etc.  I don't generally take requests, but suggestions are appreciated.

On a completely different note, I watched Jodhaa Akbar with my family on Saturday and absolutely loved it.  Wonderfully made film, beautifully shot and directed.  Acting was also top-class.  I'm going with friends to watch it again tonight.  I will try to post a complete review tomorrow.

That's all for today.  A lot more coming soon!!
